 daemon --pidfile ${PIDFILE} ${DAEMON} "$DAEMON_OPTS" -P ${PIDFILE} #>
 /dev/null 2>&1

 the --pidfile is causing varnish not to start
 I had to comment the dev null arguments at the end to find out about that

 root at serv2 [/etc/httpd/conf]# rpm -q centos-release
 centos-release-4-4.3


 There ya go.
