 Thanks for looking into it. I'll work on the vcl_trace stuff next and also
 check the source code.

 One thing that I forgot to mention is that our Varnish instance binds to
 multiple interfaces (a "public" network and a "private" network). Could
 the backend selection logic be going through some additional hoops as a
 result?
