 I've not tried this yet, but would having multiple instances of Varnish on
 the same server, with a URL-based hash load-balancer between them largely
 solve the problem until the issue is fixed?  Obviously there would be the
 overhead of the extra load-balancer in front of the Varnish instances, but
 it may be more than compensated for by the gain with large object sets.
