 First, Varnish needs other kinds of memory than the backstore, and the
 exact ratio depends on many things and factors.  For instance ban/purge
 entries which contain regular expressions will allocate memory for the
 parsing tables etc.

 I have spent a lot of time looking for memory leaks, and not found any and
 not found any way to reproduce the memory loads you and others have
 reported.

 I guess what we need is for somebody to run 2.0.4 under Valgrind to see if
 it can spot anything...
