Comment:

 Closing this with a Works-for-me resolution, as I am unable to reproduce
 your findings. Varnish correctly uses the first_byte_timeout and
 between_bytes_timeout for back end connections in all my tests.
 sess_timeout does not seem to have any influence on these connections.
