 Hello,

 What you are experiencing is Varnish detecting a timeout on the read from
 backend. Will a direct get from backend take more than 60 seconds?

 I see that you have listed this as happening in Varnish version 2.1.2.
 Could you upgrade to the latest Varnish version 2.1.4 and see if you still
 experience this?
