 FWIW, we've been running Varnish in production on 8.04 LTS since 2009
 without issue.  Have you tried building/running Varnish on a fresh install
 of 8.04?

 Also, you might try using Google's tcmalloc via a simple LD_PRELOAD.  I
 did this during initial testing and it was essentially a wash between it
 and jemalloc (so we stuck with jemalloc).
