 Possible solutions:

 - use canonware.com libedit (also in ports system)

 - use libreadline which is in FreeBSD base but which has a GPL licence

 - wait for FreeBSD libedit to grow rl_ readline hooks

 Would prefer not to wait for ages. :P What do we do, auto tools meister?
