 Bug is trivially reproducible using
 varnishncsa -F '%{Varnish:handling}x'

 I've created a patch for this bug (it seems to be because it looks for
 %{handling}x not %{Varnish:handling}x.

 I've also improved the error logging to help users resolve this issue

 The patch also improves the fix for #999 by allowing %>s as a format
 string (it's in lots of documentation)
