 First, apologies for taking so long to answer this bug.

 Given systems seem to be moving away from using standard init scripts, I
 would rather not merge this.

 I wonder if we should extend varnishadm to be able to do what you're
 asking for, or perhaps add a more high-level tool.  I suggest you raise
 this on the -misc list and we can see what people think?
