 My fault. My init script was wrong.
 I get the expected behavior with the following command::

 $ sudo /usr/local/sbin/varnishd -P /var/run/varnishd.pid -a :8080 -T
 localhost:6082 -f /usr/local/etc/varnish/default.vcl -p
 http_gzip_support=true -s file,80m -S ""
 Warning: Empty -S argument, no CLI authentication.
 }}}
