 After some investigation on the exact times that those 2 restarts occured
 (the later one blocking varnish) it turns out that some increased disk i/o
 was happening from other processes (db backups, zip, etc).

 Is there a possibility that varnish's malloc was out of real memory so the
 o/s was swaping this to the disk, but disk was busy at that time? So the
 management process thought that the child process was dead because it was
 blocked waiting on i/o?
