Comment:

 The documentation has been updated to add the '%D' format specifier that
 was previously undocumented. This will be included in the next release of
 Varnish 3.0.

 Note that the format of '%D' has been fixed to now be microseconds as an
 integer instead of a float formatted seconds. This is now in line with how
 Apache logs.

 I have been unable to reproduce the negative timings that you report. This
 could possibly be the result of setting the clock while the request is
 being processed.
