idea for load "balancer" with fan-out/ voting

I have probably mentioned it before, but I really like how Perlbal checks that a backend is working and responding to requests with an OPTIONS * (configurable) request before sending real requests down that connection.

That way the backend can just disconnect and stop responding to the OPTIONS requests when it doesn't or can't do more work.
