Updated persistent patches

[Martin Blix Grydeland]

Hi,

Attached is an updated patch set for the persistence changes I have been
working on. Compared to last submission this includes some bug fixes for
both new and existing bugs, some polish on the patch set, and stuff to
avoid holding the lock while syncing to disk.
