Varnish as a forward proxy?

Hi ,

First of all I want to state i am pretty new to Varnish. I have read
some documentation and did my research. Anyway I want to ask if
Varnish can be used as a forwarding proxy. As far as I see we must
always define a backend server which makes me think that Varnish is a
reverse proxy?

Can someone clarify this with an examle VCL if you can so it may be
more clear if varnish can be used as a forwarding proxy?
