strace causes varnishd to die

I'm trying to use strace to troubleshoot an issue with varnishd. Every time I attach to the child process it gets restarted:

[root at mvp14 yum.repos.d]# strace -p 17074
Process 17074 attached - interrupt to quit
close(6)                                = 0
write(1, "Child dies", 10)              = 10
write(1, "\n", 1)                       = 1
exit_group(1)                           = ?
Process 17074 detached

Is this indicative of a problem? It doesn't seem normal to me. I'm using varnish 2.1.5 on Centos5.7 64-bit.
