Installing varnish

I don't know what an inventum server is, although a quick search seems to
indicate inventum produces networking gear.  In general, you want to put
Varnish as far in front as possible, so you can return cache hits immediately.

What are you planning on using Varnish for?  It's normally used in front of web
applications, not as a general caching proxy.  Squid might be better suited for
your purposes.

You know your workload better than we do (since we know nothing about it), and,
really, if you're operating an ISP, you need to be able to handle this sort of
thing on your own; if you can't, I don't see the future going very well for
you.
