varnish health checks

Hello,

Is it possible to respond to a health check request (say, "/status") based on the number of objects already in memory ?

If some varnish servers are not able to reach backend servers then those servers must shutdown if there are other varnish servers that can reach reach backend servers. But, if all backend servers are down, it is better for all varnish servers to serve stale content via grace mode.  Is there a way to implement this ?
