 256k seems to work, at least it runs the test without failing. I will just
 make an arch specific patch for this in the rpm package for now, but it
 would have been better to make this a setting that would work
 automatically by configure or whatnot.

 I have now access to a working rhel6/ppc64 environment, and can do
 debugging work if necessary.
