 I know about #594 and I see http://varnish-cache.org/wiki/FAQ/Compression
 and I am at a loss at what am I supposed to do.

 It is good practice to gzip the objects before sending them to the
 client's browser, but then ESI won't work.

 If we don't use mod_deflate so we can take advantage of ESI, then we lose
 some of the response time advantage gained by using varnish in the first
 place.
