 I really don't understand this error, but I'll keep working until I do :-)

 I fixed a race in the backend/tcp_pool code, and while I'm far from
 certain that it has anything to do with this, it could explain some of the
 weirder behaviours we have seen, so if you have time to test
 eb8f35bd79206ff489b895ffb2dc3fb07cabfce5 I'd really appreciate it.
