I'm sure I've used much stuff that will call for changes or
a libcompat, but lets see how bad it is as we get there.

I have thought about sticking a compat wrapper around libevent,
but I'll wait for Provos to answer before I decide that.

yeah, but then we'd have to handle strdup() errors :-(
