Release

The tree is now in such a state that it is possible to roll a release,
in the sense that 'make dist' will produce a tarball which will build
cleanly.  There are still outstanding issues, though:

 - Portability: mostly the following issues:

     - printf() extensions
     - srandomdev()
     - <md5.h>
     - strptime()
     - vis() / strvis()

 - Documentation: for the Alpha release, all we need are installation
   instructions and a quick "getting started" guide.  Both are at
   least partly written already.
