Long wait for first byte

Hi,

We have a 128MB zip file behind varnish which, when it has expired from cache or 
when I add magic headers to force a PASS, produces a long delay between request 
and first byte. Is varnish waiting to retrieve the whole object before starting 
to send it to the client? If so, can I modify that behaviour?
