Varnishstat problems with 3.0.5 in Debian Squeeze

We have several CentOS 5 servers running Varnish 3.0.5 on which varnishstat
works as expected.  It would be good to get more data, but it does not seem
unlikely it's a distro-related thing, given all the problem reports are from
Debian-family installs.

That being said, we also don't do in-place upgrades, but bring up new VMs
afresh.
